PostSubject: Lion's Hold   Wed Apr 09, 2014 6:04 pm

Lion's Hold:
(sung to the tune of Old Maui by Stan Rogers : I suggest that you listen to the tune but turn it off before you try singing it. It can be confusing )

It's a bloody hard life full of toil and strife
We fighting men undergo
And we don't give a damn when the clash is done
How cold the winds do blow
For we're homeward bound from this blood soaked ground
With a company strong and free
And we won't give a damn when we drink our mead
In the halls of Lionís Hold

Marching home to Lionís hold, me boys
Marching home to Lionís hold.
We're homeward bound from the battle ground
Marching home to Lionís hold.

And now we sail with a Northerly gale
Through the ice, and wind, and rain
Those lush sunny fields with their rich hearty yields
We soon shall taste again
Three hellish months we toiled away
In the cold of northern wastes
Now a living gale sweeps after us
Thank God we're homeward bound

Sailing home to Lionís hold, me boys
Sailing home to Lionís hold.
We're homeward bound from the battle ground
Sailing home to Lionís hold.

How soft the breeze through familiar trees
Along the Haldorf roads.
Those shady glades, those rural maids,
Are awaiting our return
Even now their big clear eyes look out
Hoping some fine day to see
Our Lion white Ďpon a banner black
Rippling in the breeze

Marching home to Lionís hold, me boys
Marching home to Lionís hold.
We're homeward bound from the battle ground
Marching home to Lionís hold.

And now we sit in our ancient hall
Where the food and drink abound
With chants and song and cheers and cries
With our comrades all around
And weíll rant and roar as our spirits soar
And the tales of our deeds unfold
And we don't give a damn as we drink our mead
In the halls of Lionís Hold

Safely home in Lion's hold me boys,
Safely home in Lion's hold!
We are home safe and sound from the battle ground
Safely home in Lion's hold!

One word: Dayum.

I'm glad you guys liked it. I think this would be a great song to sing marching away from any given battle and if a few guys at least knew the chorus it would be all the more awesome.

I just now changed around a couple of words in one verse, and omitted the eye color of our rural maids. I thought my blue eyed lady who is bound to hear it soon might think it's weird that I said "big brown eyes"

I was wondering if there was a reason why one chorus is "sailing home" while all the others have "marching home".

Because the section that precedes that part of the chorus is about sailing through the frozen north.

And now we sail with a Northerly gale
Through the ice, and wind, and rain
Those lush sunny fields with their rich hearty yields
We soon shall taste again
A hellish month we toiled away
In the cold of northern wastes
A living gale sweeps after us
Thank God we're homeward bound

yeah... I know it could cause confusion but I also thought it would be cool if the chorus reflected the Verses in that way.... what's your feelings on the matter guys? Is it worth having a changing chorus or should the composition of the chorus remain the same every time?

proposed final chorus:

safely Home in lion's hold me boys!
Safely home in Lion's hold!
We're home safe and sound from the battle ground
safely home at Lion's hold!

Generally choruses remain the same, though they can sometimes be altered slightly to do exactly that Sir Cynan. I've always been a fan of using similar techniques when composing songs and poetry in an attempt to produce a feeling of closure - in the sense that the journey began at home, shit happened in the middle, but in the end we find our way back home you catch my drift.

I think it merits experimentation.

Ah, that's why.
I have no objection to the chorus changing a bit, makes it more interesting, but there might be a few people ( myself included ) that may forget and sing "march" when the rest sings "sail". Please don't flog us.
